Hills Community Hike WINS MERIT AWARD

California Trails & Greenways Conference
May 30, 2008 San Diego, CA
Verdugo Hills
Community Hike
(Cities of Burbank & Glendale)
The Verdugo Hills Community Hike
is an annual event sponsored by the Cities of Burbank and
Glendale that opens up the Verdugo Mountains fire roads
and trails to hikers and runners. The seventh annual event
held on November 3, 2007 was attended by one hundred sixty
five trail users. The participants had their choice of three
starting points and two destinations. Routes included a
7.2 mile hike, a 2 mile "hike lite" and a 13.8
mile trail run.
In addition to city staff, fifty
seven volunteers from local ham operator clubs, Boy Scouts,
Glendale Park Ranger Explorer Scouts, Burbank Nature Docents
and Burbank Junior Docents helped to make the event a great
success.
The partnerships formed by this
hike have started the dialog between surrounding
jurisdictions for a comprehensive regional trail plan and
opened up the Verdugo Mountains as the region's "other
backyard".

HIKERS!
It was great. So beautiful ... and everyone
on the trail was great. Cary Michel, 2008
The sense of community is just great.
Mike Bowen, 2008
On Saturday, November 4, 2006, I participated
in the Verdugo Hills Community Hike and found it quite enjoyable.
I met a lot of nice people along the way and the weather
could not be any better. The food served by the Boy Scouts
was good at Fire Warden's Grove. Ray, 2006
RUNNERS!
I ran the Verudgo Hills Trail Run on Saturday,
November 3, 2007 and had a great time. Thank you to all
the volunteers at the start area in Brand Park, the rangers,
Boy Scouts, other course volunteers, and the enthusiastic
welcoming group at the summit. It was my first time running
in the Verdugo Hills, and it was a great morning. I'll definitely
be back next year. Joanie, 2007
